Jack B. Brooks papers
-
Description
-
Martin Luther King, Jr. telegrams Jack Brooks, urging him not to vote to seat the Mississippi Democratic Party's delegation. At the time, the official Mississippi Democratic Party only allowed participation by white people. King lobbied for the inclusion of delegates from the Mississippi Freedom Party in the National Democratic Convention, whose Black and white delegates were elected in local, seperate caucuses opposed by the White Citizens Council and other proponents of segregation. Although the National Democratic Convention did not end up seating the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party's delegates, the activism highlighted the nature of racist electoral politics, and allowed for the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to gain Congressional passage. This telegram was possibly a form letter sent to multiple Congressmen.
