Survey sent by CBS News to House members regarding their views on President Richard Nixon's potential impeachment and their sense of what their district thinks. Jack Brooks marks Inflation and the Oil Crisis as the two most important issues in his district at the time. -
Description
-
A draft of a constituent survey commissioned by Jack Brooks during the 1968 election in order to better understand the needs of voters in the 9th district. Brooks's original district, the 2nd district, was redistricted into the 9th district in 1966 after the Supreme Court ruled in Wesbery v. Sanders that congressional districts had to be close to equal in population. Brooks lost 8 out of the 9 east Texas counties he originally represented in this redistricting. In the 1966 election in the 2nd district, Brooks ran unopposed and won. In the 1968 election in the new 9th district, he ran against Henry Charles Pressler, and won with 60.9% of the vote. The draft includes a question regarding gun control, which in a corresponding note, Brooks recommends removing and replacing with a question about race relations.
