Ray Chávez has promoted diversity throughout his lengthy newspaper career, from posts as general assignment reporter to city editor. He is a founder of the National Association for Hispanic Journalists, and has served as chairman of the Colorado Press Association's Diversity Committee. Chávez is a two-time winner of the National Teaching Award for Excellence from the Poynter Institute for Media Studies. As director of the SJMC Office of Student Diversity, Chávez speaks to students from all over the country, sparking their enthusiasm and motivation to pursue journalism as a career.

Reginald Stuart has been a lifelong journalist. He was elected national president of the Society of Professional Journalists in 1994 and later received the Ida B. Wells Award for promoting diversity in journalism, the Leadership in Diversity Award from the Asian American Journalists Association and the Wells Memorial Key from the Society of Professional Journalists. Stuart was also instrumental in developing programs for Knight Ridder including the Knight Ridder Scholars Program and Native American Internship Program.

Sharon Bramlett is an associate professor in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. Her background includes working in newspaper, public relations and radio. She has taught many courses but has a focus on race and gender mass communication courses. Her research is centered around media influence of race and social class. She has written and presented over 100 research papers in this topic, and has contributed chapters to books. As an active member of AEJMC, she has served on many committees throughout her professional career. She is a recipient of the Barry Bingham Fellowship, and Professor of the Year Award from the Newspaper Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Susanne Shaw is the executive director of the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. ACEJMC is responsible for the evaluation of professional journalism and mass communication programs in U.S. colleges and universities. She is a past Executive Director of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). Shaw teaches at the University of Kansas, where she has been for more than 30 years.

Description

Tom Engleman worked for his college newspaper and my college yearbook. After graduating he went into the Army for a little bit, came out, and went to graduate school of journalism at the University of South Carolina and worked for the newspaper in Columbia. Later, Engleman worked for Dow Jones newspaper and became an executive director for the Dow Jones News Fund. Engleman chose to go into the newspaper business itself to help in any small way where he continues to focus on helping to find young people to teach young people in this industry.

Tony Atwater has had an enriched career in broadcast journalism and administration. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in mass media arts from Hampton University in 1973, and his Ph.D. in communication research from Michigan State University in 1983. He has performed research in news selection behavior in the mass media, and has published 30 refereed journal articles on the subject. Atwater held administrative positions at Northern Kentucky University, the University of Toledo, and Youngstown State University in Ohio. He served as the President of Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2005, and Norfolk State University in 2011. In addition, he served as the president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).

Wanda Lloyd is an associate professor and former chair of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at Savannah State University. She has a wide range of journalism experience, including serving as deputy managing editor for USA Today. She is a former director of the American Society of News Editors (ASNE) and a co-founder of the National Association of Minority Media Executives (NAMME). In 2004, she joined forces with Freedom Forum to create the Diversity Institute based in Vanderbilt University. She also is a co-author and editor of "The Edge of Change: Women in the 21st Century Press." In addition, she had served as a member of the advisory board of the Dow Jones News Fund and is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
