Jack Brooks announces the passage of a bill to provide financial relief for those affected by the Texas City disaster. The disaster was the deadliest industrial accident in United States history. The Senate drafted legislation to provide compensation for the victims in 1955 after the Supreme Court ruled against a class action lawsuit brought on their behalf. Brooks worked to make the victims the beneficiaries of the legislation, rather than insurance companies and large corporations.
