Boys get the most out of a tree house in Salina, Kansas, 1960. When Heikes arrived every morning at the Salina Journal for assignments, editor Glenn Williams, would say, "go beat the bushes, kid!" Heikes would have thirty minutes to shoot a feature picture for the front page. This was good training as many of his feature photos were later printed by major newspapers nationwide.
