Description

Jack Brooks's response to a constituent, Kirk Clark, regarding the Arab Oil Embargo and the state of the U.S. economy [camh-dob-001218]. Brooks explains that the U.S. government did not enter into contracts with Arab nations to supply the United States with oil, rather, that Arab nations were "primarily financed by oil companies which were generally owned by American citizens." Regarding the economy, Brooks acknowledges the problem of inflation, particularly in the past two years, and criticizes the role of the Nixon Administration.

Description
-
Jack Brooks's statement in response to over one thousand constituents who signed a petition demanding action and suggesting a Congressional investigation regarding the captured USS Pueblo. The original packet of signatures was mailed in by constituent Jeff Riley [camh-dob-001205]. Brooks mailed a statement to every person who had signed the petition, an act Riley later commended. Brooks assures his constituents of his concern and calls the incident "an act of piracy." The crew was released into U.S. custody on December 23, 1968, but the USS Pueblo remains in North Korea today.
