Jack Brooks's handwritten notes keeping track of the vote count for the Democratic Caucus House Majority Leader. The first vote was between Richard Bolling, Phillip Burton, Jim Wright, and John McFall. McFall was eliminated after the first vote, and Bolling was eliminated after the second vote. Jim Wright ultimately beat Phillip Burton by one vote, 148-147, to become House Majority Leader. Wright would later succeed Tip O'Neill as Speaker of the House in 1987.

Brooks declares that Wright was tried by the media rather than his colleagues and warns against the weaponization of partisanship. Wright announced his intent to resign on May 31, 1989. He left Congress on June 30, 1989 and was replaced as Speaker by Congressman Tom Foley.
