Diary of Somervell's Expedition Against the Southwest in 1842 and 1843

Led by General Alexander Somervell, the expedition answered the Mexican army's raids into Texas in 1842. A force of 700 men left San Antonio in November 1842, but by mid-December Somervell recognized the insufficiencies in planning and preparation and, to avoid an overwhelming defeat, ordered his men to return home. Almost half of the original force continued to Mexico as part of the Mier Expedition.
