Detroit Free Press caption reads: A.B. Smallwood, a logger and pastor of the House of Prayer, maneuvers a 500-pound log down a hill with the help of his horse, Bob. Born in Stinking Creek, A.B. worked in Detroit for six years and still carries a tattered union card from his days at Ford. He became a Christian and returned to Kentucky in 1975. From the Detroit Free Press Magazine story, "On Stinking Creek," 1990/09/09, about a small Appalachian community in Eastern Kentucky where residents over generations have migrated to Detroit for better jobs and often back to their mountain community life. (The Detroit Free Press nominated Nickerson's photo essay for a Pulitzer Prize in feature photography in 1991.)
