: Diary of Somervell's Expedition Against the Southwest in 1842 and 1843; Led by General Alexander Somervell, the expedition answered the Mexican army's raids into Texas in 1842. A force of 700 men left San Antonio in November 1842, but by mid-December Somervell recognized the insufficiencies in planning and preparation and, to avoid an overwhelming defeat, ordered his men to return home.
